Townsville Islands and Reefs

When you think of Townsville, you immediately think of Magnetic Island. Just a short trip from Townsville on the Magnetic Island ferry, 'Maggie' is without doubt one of the city's greatest assets.

Known as Townsville's playground, this island has about 9 km of road for hiking or bike riding that will take you to most of its secluded bays and beaches.

Nelly Bay on Magnetic Island is one of its most beautiful spots, having a breathtaking vista, as well as accommodation and other facilities.

If it's a more exclusive island retreat you're looking for, Bedarra Island, just north of Townsville and just off the coast of Mission Beach, may be more your speed. You will need to pull out the platinum Amex, but it will be worth it.

Dunk Island is another tropical playground, home to Voyages Dunk Island Resort, as well as a handy camping ground.

Off the coast of Cardwell is the spectacular and unspoilt Hinchinbrook Island. It is not for the fainthearted though. It is for campers only.

Another well-known asset of Townsville, is Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Sunferries of Magnetic Island can take you to a selection of the region's best reefs. These trips are perfect for divers and snorkellers alike, and provide a delectable lunch, as well as equipment and tuition.

Trips to the wrecks of the 'Yongala' and 'Pandora's Box', lying just off the coast of Townsville, are worth a visit. These popular diving spots open a window into the region's history, as well as offering a taste of the magnificent Great Barrier Reef.
